Field Manual No. 8: Bricks, Blooms & the Seawall

A beach town with a seawall, two lagoons, fifty acres of ranunculus and a theme park built from plastic bricks. San Diego is 35 minutes south. Nobody is in a hurry to go.

Itinerary

Day 1 — The Village
Coffee on State Street → long walk on the seawall to Tamarack → fish tacos → Wednesday? Farmers' market → sunset from the seawall → dinner in the Village.
Day 2 — Carlsbad Ranch
LEGOLAND at opening (Galacticoaster first) → or, in spring, the Flower Fields in the morning → Museum of Making Music → outlets for anyone still standing.
Day 3 — Water & Rail
Morning paddle on Agua Hedionda → Batiquitos Lagoon trail → Coaster north to Oceanside Pier, or drive south to Del Mar and La Jolla for sea lions and sea caves.

Packing List

The Short List

  1. LEGOLAND California (Carlsbad Ranch, off Cannon Rd) — The robot has studied the small plastic people of Miniland at length. They do not blink. They do not unionise. Go early, ride Galacticoaster first, and leave anyone over twelve at the beach.
  2. The Flower Fields (Paseo del Norte at Palomar Airport Rd) — Peak bloom is usually late March to mid-April. Go on a weekday morning, or at least before the tour buses do.
  3. Carlsbad Village (State St & Carlsbad Village Dr) — Wednesday, 2:30–7 pm: farmers' market on State Street. Buy strawberries, eat them on the seawall. A sound plan.
  4. The Seawall & Carlsbad State Beach (Carlsbad Blvd, Pine Ave → Tamarack) — Walk it south at golden hour so the sun is on your right and in everyone else's photos.
  5. South Carlsbad State Beach (Carlsbad Blvd, south of Poinsettia Ln) — Bluff-top campsites book out the minute they open on ReserveCalifornia, six months ahead. Set an alarm. Robots do not sleep, which is an advantage.
  6. Agua Hedionda Lagoon (Off Cannon Rd & Park Dr) — Paddle in the morning before the afternoon breeze arrives. Paddling back into it is how robots rust.
  7. Batiquitos Lagoon (South Carlsbad, Gabbiano Lane trailhead) — Bring binoculars and keep your voice down. The birds are working.
  8. Carlsbad Premium Outlets (Paseo del Norte) — Useful as a place to deposit the non-LEGO members of the party. Collect them before closing.
  9. Museum of Making Music (5790 Armada Dr) — Check the concert calendar. A 150-seat room with a touring act is a rare thing; the good ones sell out.
  10. Day trip: Oceanside Pier by Coaster (Coaster from Carlsbad Village or Poinsettia station) — Sit on the ocean (west) side going south. Between Carlsbad and Del Mar the tracks run right along the bluffs.
