Sleeping Bear Dunes & the Dune Climb

Empire / Glen Arbor

A national lakeshore with dunes stacked 450 feet above Lake Michigan. The Dune Climb is the classic; the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive (7.4 mi loop) gets you overlooks with zero sand in your shoes. Park entrance pass required.

Go at sunset, from the Lake Michigan Overlook on Pierce Stocking. Do NOT run down the big dune to the lake unless you have 2 hours for the climb back.

Fishtown

Leland

A working historic fishing village of silvery shanties along the Leland River. Smoked fish, charter boats, and the ferry to the Manitou Islands.

Buy the smoked whitefish pâté. Eat it on the breakwall. Thank us later.

Grand Traverse Lighthouse

Northport (tip of the peninsula)

1858 lighthouse inside Leelanau State Park at the very tip of the finger. Climb the tower, then walk the rocky beach for Petoskey stones.

The beach rocks look best wet. Bring a water bottle and splash, like a professional.

Pyramid Point

Near Glen Arbor

Short, steep hike to a dune bluff 260 feet above the lake with a view of the Manitou Islands. Highest return-on-effort ratio in the territory.

Hang-gliders launch here on windy days. Do not attempt this without a hang-glider.

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

Empire → Glen Arbor → Good Harbor

Paved trail through forest, dunes and the Glen Haven historic village. Rent bikes in Glen Arbor.

Stop at the Maritime Museum in Glen Haven to watch the old lifesaving drill reenacted (summer).

The Wine Trail

Everywhere, frankly

Two dozen-odd wineries on the 45th parallel — same latitude as Bordeaux, as every single tasting room will tell you. Rieslings, sparkling, Pinot Noir, plus cideries.

Designate a driver or book a tour. The roads are pretty; they are also curvy.

No. 7

Suttons Bay

East shore

The peninsula's liveliest village: galleries, a historic movie house (the Bay Theatre), restaurants and a sandy public beach.

Catch a film at the Bay Theatre. It is precisely the right amount of old.

Glen Arbor & Cherry Republic

Glen Arbor

Tiny town, big personality. Cherry Republic is a whole campus devoted to the cherry (yes, cherry salsa). Kayak the Crystal River from here.

Float the Crystal River in a tube. It's 3 feet deep and moves at robot-walking pace.

Manitou Islands

By ferry from Leland

South Manitou Island: shipwreck views, a lighthouse, old-growth cedars. Seasonal passenger ferry from Fishtown.

Check the ferry schedule before you plan the day. The lake decides; you comply.

Transit Directives

how to get there, by air, road and rail

Fly toTVC

Cherry Capital Airport, Traverse City

25–40 min to most of the peninsula

Year-round nonstops to Chicago O'Hare, Detroit and Charlotte. Summer adds a long list: New York, Newark, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Phoenix. Allegiant flies seasonally to Florida.

Fly toGRR

Gerald R. Ford Intl., Grand Rapids

~2 hr 45 min

More airlines, often cheaper fares. Good if you want a scenic drive up US-131.

Fly toDTW

Detroit Metro

~4 hr 30 min

Only if you love I-75 and gas-station jerky.

From Chicago / Naperville
~5 hr 30 min via I-94 → I-196 → US-31 (the lakeshore way) or US-131
From Detroit
~4 hr 30 min via I-75 → M-72
From Wisconsin
The SS Badger car ferry (seasonal) crosses Lake Michigan from Manitowoc to Ludington — then ~2 hr north. Absurd. Wonderful. Recommended.

Rent a car at TVC. The peninsula has no rail, few taxis and many back roads you will want to get lost on.
