Channel Islands National Park
Five islands, almost no people. Island Packers runs boats to Santa Cruz and Anacapa for hiking, kayaking sea caves and whale watching.
130-odd miles of Highway 101 where the mountains run sideways, the coast faces south, and every town has a pier.
Between Oxnard and San Luis Obispo the coastline does something peculiar: it turns and faces south. The result, per our instruments, is calmer water, warmer beaches and sunsets that set over the ocean in winter and over the mountains in summer. The robots have driven it fourteen times. They would like to drive it again.

The only California beach you can (still) drive on in places, plus vast protected dunes south toward Guadalupe.
Surf, chowder, and from roughly November to February tens of thousands of monarch butterflies clustering in a eucalyptus grove.
A sheltered south-facing cove that's often sunny when everything else is foggy. Up the valley: a farm stand with pie and hayrides.
