Packing List
- Layers (fog at 9, sun at 11)
- Sunscreen — the ocean breeze lies
- Reservations for Channel Islands boats
- An appetite for tri-tip
- Binoculars for whales & otters
The Short List
- Channel Islands National Park (Boats from Ventura & Oxnard) — Book ahead and bring everything: there is no food, no shop, and the foxes will steal your sandwich.
- Ventura Pier & Promenade (Ventura) — Main Street thrift crawl, then fish tacos on the pier.
- Carpinteria Seal Rookery (Carpinteria Bluffs) — Quiet voices. The seals have union representation.
- Old Mission Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara) — Memorial Day weekend: I Madonnari chalk-painting festival covers the plaza.
- The Funk Zone & Stearns Wharf (Santa Barbara waterfront) — The Urban Wine Trail lets you taste Santa Barbara County without driving to it.
- Gaviota State Park (Gaviota) — Fill the tank before the stretch north of Goleta. Services are scarce.
- Oceano Dunes (Oceano / Grover Beach) — Rent an ATV or just walk. The dunes are free and make an excellent robot-photo backdrop.
- Pismo Beach Pier & Monarch Grove (Pismo Beach) — Monarchs fly when it's warm — go late morning on a sunny day.
- Avila Beach & Avila Valley Barn (Avila Beach) — Bob Jones Trail from the barn to the beach — flat, easy, pie-powered.
- Bubblegum Alley & the Madonna Inn (San Luis Obispo) — Even if you don't stay at the Madonna Inn, go for pink champagne cake. Then use the men's room. Trust the robot.
- Morro Rock (Morro Bay) — Kayak the bay at slack tide and count the otters. Our record: 14.
Getting There
- SBA — Santa Barbara Airport: 10 min to Santa Barbara · 50 min to Oxnard
- SBP — San Luis Obispo County Regional: 10 min to SLO · 20 min to Pismo
- BUR / LAX — Burbank or Los Angeles: BUR ~50 min to Oxnard · LAX ~1 hr 15 min+ (traffic dependent)
- The classic: Fly into LAX or BUR, drive north on the 101, fly home from SBP. One-way rental fees apply — usually worth it.
- By train: Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner runs the whole coast: Oxnard, Ventura, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Grover Beach, San Luis Obispo. North of Santa Barbara the tracks hug cliffs no highway touches.
- From San Francisco: ~3 hr 45 min down the 101 to SLO
